Though I didn’t tackle all of them, the breadth of material covered was invaluable. Alongside this, Jason Dion’s practice tests were crucial, especially for identifying weak spots early on. YouTube also played a role in my preparation, with Professor Messer’s video guides clearing up any lingering questions.
Setting a Study Routine
While I aimed for a minimum of six hours of study each day, I employed the Pomodoro Technique to maximize retention and avoid burnout. This involved short bursts of focused study followed by brief, disciplined breaks—crucially, avoiding the temptation to doom scroll on my phone or engage in other distracting activities. These breaks were true downtimes, giving my brain the essential rest needed to assimilate information effectively and maintain a high level of concentration through each study session.
Practice Makes Perfect
Here’s a strategy that worked wonders: I took a practice test before diving deep into studying. This ‘start where you are’ method, similar to my approach for the A+ certification, helped prime my brain. I went through all of the material in about 4 days, and spent the remaining 10 days drilling practice tests until I got a decent score. Once you start getting 80s on the Dion tests, you should be ready to take the test.
Dealing with Setbacks
Initially, the fast pace was brutal. Missteps were common, and I often felt overwhelmed and doubted my abilities. However, reviewing topics multiple times was key to overcoming this hurdle. Cramming early is the key, I cant stress this enough, go through all of the material as fast as you possibly can. The majority of your time should be practice tests and reviewing material.
The Exam Experience
I recommend taking the exam in person, I have heard many different complaints about the online proctors being way too strict (such as a dog barking ending the exam). The controlled setting of a test center provided the stability I needed to focus solely on the exam.
